Meet Mr. SO2 (also known as Mr. Sulphur Dioxide) He is a colourless gas so you can't see him but you can smell him. He smells horrible and he can irritate your eyes and your lungs and airways!
The most common man-made source is the burning of fossil fuels - like coal, oil, gas, petrol and diesel, Sulphur Dioxide is also produced naturally from sources like volcanoes.
Sulphur dioxide pollution was responsible for the death of about 4000 people as a result of the Great Smog of London in 1952. Currently sulphur dioxide pollution is much lower due to stronger regulations and new technologies that can clean the pollution that is released factories. Sulphur dioxide can cause breathing difficulties, especially for people who suffer from asthma.
